Project Dates: 1992-1993
Project Description:
The documentation of the traditional architecture of western Sumba Island, Indonesia. The research identifies and records the interrelationships of the architecture of the traditional clan-house, the lithic ancestral tomb, village organization, and their expressions of Sumbanese beliefs, customs, and social structure. The research in Wanukaka, where one of the world’s last megalithic cultures has entered a state of erosion, provides Joanna Mross the opportunity to explore simultaneously her academic interest in architecture and the fine arts, and her personal interests in archeology and anthropology.
