How does language use reflect power relations?
Does power (politics/economy) determine which language we
speak,
teach, and/or learn?
Does our gender or our sexual orientation influence how we
use language or the role we are assigned when interacting
with each other?
How is gender and sexuality portrayed in language, art,
literature, and culture?

Céfiro welcomes submissions committed to exploring the
expression and operation of these variables—language, power,
and sexuality—in all areas and periods of Latin American and
Iberian languages, literatures, and cultures, and from
multiple disciplines and/or theoretical approaches:
Linguistics, Art and Literature, Cultural Studies, Gender
Studies, Feminism, Women’s Studies, Postcolonialism,
Postmodernism, Queer Studies, History, Politics, Psychology,
Philosophy, etc.
Papers and panel proposals will be considered on any related
theme in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. 250-word abstracts
should be submitted by
Monday, March 8, 2010.
Abstracts may be in Microsoft Word 2000 or better with the
following information and in this order: title of paper,
author(s), affiliation, contact information, title of
abstract, and body of abstract. We acknowledge receipt and
answer to all paper or panel proposals submitted.
Reading
time of final papers is limited to 20 minutes (8-10
double-spaced pages). No papers will be read in absentia.
Complete electronic submissions of papers between 10 and 20
pages will be considered for publication in Céfiro,
the academic journal of our graduate student organization.

To help defray travel expenses for graduate students, there
will be a limited number of accommodations available in the
homes of the members of Céfiro to be allocated on
a first-come, first-served basis; thus, early registration is
encouraged. Information regarding hotels, transportation,
etc., will be available later at the above address.
