Basic Rules of Motions during Old/ New Business

To bring up a Motion

Step 1:

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“I motion to ____________”

Step 2:

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“Second the motion to ____________”

Step 3:

The seconded motion is automatically tabled to the next meeting in order to be voted upon in Old Business

 

To vote on a motion The Same Meeting

Step 1: 

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“I motion to vote on the seconded motion ____________ Today

Step 2:

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“Second the motion to vote on the seconded motion ____________ Today

Step 3:

VP- Aye’s and Nye’s, hand vote, or secret ballet depending on the situation

 

To Motion to Discuss:

Motion to discuss may only be done after the motion is seconded.  (There is nothing to discuss if the motion does not get seconded.)

 

Step 1:

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“I motion to discuss the seconded motion,  ____________”

Step 2:  there MUST be a second

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“Second the motion to discuss the seconded motion ____________”

Step 3:  the vote to discuss MUST PASS to discuss

VP- Aye’s and Nye’s, hand vote, depending on the situation

Step 4:

VP- Open the table to discussion.  Participants must wait to be called on by the VP

 

Motion to End Discussion

Motion to end discussion may be done at any time during the discussion. 

 

Step 1:

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“I motion to end the discussion”

Step 2:  there MUST be a second

Raise hand, called upon by VP

“Second the motion to end discussion”

Step 3:  the vote to end discussion MUST PASS to end discussion

VP- Aye’s and Nye’s, hand vote, depending on the situation

Step 4:

VP- End of Discussion and move to vote
