Eta Lambda History
After much discussion among the members of the Lubbock Chapter, the decision was made to charter a collegiate chapter on the campus of Texas Tech University. Lubbock Chapter president, Mildred Lusk, stated in the charter request "There is an expressed need for an organization like Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on the campus of Texas Tech University. The aims and objectives of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority can become real on the campus of Texas Tech University...The university is quite large, is growing and from all indications will continue to offer a fertile field for Delta development. "Regional Director, June Brewer, agreed and gave her written approval on March 23, 1970. On April 17, 1970, the Eta Lambda chapter was chartered at Texas Tech. These 13 enthusiastic initiates also made university history that day by becoming the first African American organization to be chartered on the campus. As it was in 1970, Texas Tech University continues to "offer a fertile field for Delta developement."
