Who is eligible for Recruitment?
- A woman is eligible to participate in Recruitment and join a sorority if she is enrolled at Texas Tech University as a full-time student. A full-time student is defined as having 12 credit hours per semester, excluding correspondence courses and courses at other universities.
- She must not be a new or initiated member of any National Panhellenic Conference Sorority.
How do I register for Recruitment?
- To register with Texas Tech University Panhellenic, you must submit your application and pay on-line. You must also mail in all of the information requested on the Registration Checklist.
- You may also register with your Area Alumnae Panhellenic. By registering with your area Alumnae Panhellenic, you have an opportunity to meet alumnae from your area, attend an orientation session, and gain assistance in obtaining reference letters.
- Registration will begin May 12 and end August 13. Please wait to register until you have your final High School transcript information.
- Do NOT send resumes to TTU Panhellenic. All information that is included on your resume should be put on your online application under the activities section.
When is Fall Formal Recruitment for 2008?
- Fall Formal Recruitment will begin with the Recruitment Kick-Off at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16.
- Recruitment events will take place from August 17 to August 22.
What kind of grade point average do I need?
- Although the Panhellenic Association does not require a specific GPA to participate in Recruitment, the individual chapters establish their own requirements. The chapters strongly adhere to these grade requirements.
- Both high school and college grade requirements start at approximately 3.0.
- Sororities were founded primarily upon principles of academic excellence, and this is a primary consideration in membership selection.
How many letters of reference/recommendation do I need?
- It is not required that you obtain reference letters to participate in Recruitment. The responsibility for providing reference letters rests with alumnae. Joining a sorority is not necessarily contingent upon alumnae sponsorship.
- For more information on reference letters/letters of recommendation, please contact your local Area Alumnae Panhellenic.
Do I need to send a copy of my high school or college transcript?
- A transcript of the courses you took and received credit for in high school is required. The transcript should also include your final GPA and your rank in class.
- If your ACT/SAT scores are not included on your transcript, please include a copy of your scores. If you attended college, a copy of your college transcript is also required.
- You must include one (1) official final transcript, and the others may be copies.
- Please send both your high school and college transcripts if you either have dual credit hours or are a college freshman or sophomore.
- College Juniors and Seniors only need to send their college transcripts.
Are my SAT/ACT scores important?
- The chapters will take into account a participant's SAT/ACT scores along with her high school/college grades.
- If a Potential New Member's scores/grades are low, the chapters will have concern for the possibility of the Potential New Member experiencing difficulty in managing the time commitment required for New Member Education and a busy school schedule.
Should I attend New Student Orientation?
- Yes! New Student Orientation allows you to pre-register for classes and become acquainted with the campus. A session on Greek Life will be presented as a program during Orientation.
- We advise you attend a Greek Life Orientation session and visit with the Panhellenic Council and/or Sorority Advisor during New Student Orientation, and we look forward to seeing you there!
Can I take IS 1100 Freshman Seminar and participate in Recruitment?
- Yes! You should enroll in an 8:00am section as this will allow you to participate in both events without any time conflicts.
- You should go to class dressed in your recruitment clothes on Monday and Tuesday as you will have to go straight from class to the commuter parking lot to meet the buses that will take you to Greek Circle.
Where do I live during Recruitment week?
- You will live where you plan to reside during the school year. All University residence halls will be open for participants.
- Individuals who have registered for Formal Recruitment may move into the residence halls on Saturday, August 16th beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Do I need a car for Recruitment events?
- NO! Because Greek Circle is located off-campus, the Panhellenic Council will provide transportation to and from all Recruitment events.
- All Potential New Members are required to utilize the buses provided for transportation to and from Recruitment events.
How much time does a sorority take?
- There is a required meeting once a week where you receive information of chapter events and learn fraternity history. New members have a separate weekly meeting to learn more about their new sorority or fraternity. Weekly chapter study sessions are a programming option for all members.
- In addition, weekend events like sisterhood activities, community service projects, and social events are also an option. Remember, the more you put into the sorority, the more you will get out of it.
How much is a sorority going to cost?
- Each Potential New Member should be aware of the financial responsibilities of sorority life before joining a sorority.
- On average, the first semester of sorority membership is twice as expensive as the following semesters.
- During the New Member Education semester, dues at Texas Tech range from $800 to $1,100.
- Semester dues for initiated/active members range from $350 to $600.
- These costs exclude sorority paraphernalia such as shirts, jewelry, and other items.
- Sororities typically ask for dues payments at the beginning of the semester. Payment plans and scholarships are also available.
