About Hillel

Hillel at Texas Tech is the only Jewish student organization at
Texas Tech University.

We are a small group of Jewish students who want to build the Jewish community here at Tech.  We gather every other weekend to bring in the Shabbat on Friday night together.  Our Shabbat services run from around 20 to 45 minutes, and are open to all Jewish students and any non-Jewish student interested in the service.  The Shabbat Services are conducted with TTU Hillel Siddurim in a Reform/Conservative manner; following services we have a small Oneg with grape juice and challah for all to enjoy and occasionally go out for dinner as a group sponsored by Hillel.

During the fall semester we organize student gatherings for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  In the spring semester Hillel puts on our biggest event of the year with our Passover Seder.  This Seder is in a fun laid back environment which highlights all of the important parts and prayers of the Seder, along with delicious food prepared by the Hillel officers and any other volunteer participants.  The Seder is open to Tech students along with members of the community, everyone is welcome to the Seder.  Throughout the year, Hillel and its members are involved with active community service such as: can food drives during Passover and Rosh Hashanah, helping at the local synagogue Shaareth Israel, and various service opportunities through Texas Tech.

We also have small social events including bowling, billiards, Purim and Chanukah Parties.  All students are welcome to all of the Hillel events and can participate fully.  We encourage students who are trying to rediscover their Jewish faith, or non-Jews that are interested in Judaism to come and observe and participate!

Hillel at Texas Tech is affiliated with the national Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.  The name Hillel comes from a teacher who moved to Eretz Israel in the first century and founded a school of thought and taught to his disciples community, love, and peace.  Our organization is currently funded by private donors including students, alumni, and community members; along with funds allocated by the TTU Student Government Association, and fundraisers put on by Hillel.  Accomplishments of Hillel include: its members have organized Tech to offer a biblical Hebrew course listed in their classical & modern languages and literature department, past members taking high leadership rolls with Congregation Shaareth Israel's Sunday school, acceptance and participation in birthright Israel: Hillel Trip, and past member participating in year long Otzma Israel volunteer program.
