History

In 1964 a small group of Hispanic students, known as “Los Tertulianos” formed a student organization to promote the Hispanic culture of Texas Tech University. At the time, Los Tertulianos was the first minority student organization established at Tech and set the building blocks of things to come. As the organization traveled through time and grew, the name changed with it. In the mid-70’s it was known as UMAS (United Mexican American Students) before the organization finally settled on the Hispanic Student Society in 1984.
