Things to do after landing in Lubbock, Texas

  • Call home on landing. Ask a senior in your apartment how to call. If it is to Mumbai dial (01191) then 22 (STD code of your city - Mumbai in this case) then the number. i.e. 011 91 22 NUMBER.
  • Apply for the Social Security Number (SSN) (Free, sometimes you will be taken to apply for it during the Orientation). Ask the seniors where to apply for it.
  • Apply for the Texas Tech Student ID at the ID office in Student Union. It is free.
  • Collect the latest Graduate Catalog. A campus map is there in the Graduate Catalog (available free in the Departments). Also check the online map at http://www.ttu.edu/campusMap/
  • Decide on housing and roommates as early as possible. Apartments where most of the Indian students reside are: You can check these out on

  • If you are not employed by any of the departments as yet, then register for On-campus jobs at West hall. Prepare a resume. Drop your resume in as many departments as possible in the campus and also in the Library.
  • Make sure you attend the Check-in and Orientation.
  • Open a Checking and/or Savings account in the bank of your choice (American State Bank / Wells Fargo). You can deposit the DD in your name and the Cashiers check there. You might need an introducer, take along a senior for this.
  • Get in touch with your graduate advisor (different from Thesis Advisor). You need the signature of your advisor for registering for the courses in fall semester. Go to your department they will help you with this.
  • If you have not taken your immunization shots, make sure that you take them in the Student Health Center in Thompson Hall. If you have already taken the shots, submit the records in Thompson Hall.
  • Make sure you pay the fees at the Student Business Services in Drane Hall as soon as you have registered. The DD in the name of the college can be given there and they will refund any balance by mail if there is any.
  • Register as a member of ISA as soon as possible. If you have any questions, feel free to ask any senior or ISA committee members. We hope you will enjoy your stay here. Remember all the campus buses are free for students. Make sure you get a Campus Route map from the bus.
