Phi Beta Kappa

High School Academic Excellence Award

The Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association of West Texas - Eastern New Mexico wishes to recognize high school junior students who have outstanding academic records and honor them with its Academic Excellence Award.

Application forms are available from high school counselors, from the committee chairman, Dr. Robert H. Posteraro, 222 Zoar Ave., Lubbock, TX 79416, or from this website (see below). Any high school junior in West Texas or Eastern New Mexico may apply. Directions for entering the competition appear on the application. Criteria for recognition include excellence in academics as demonstrated by success in challenging classes and potential for continuing intellectual excellence as demonstrated by success on standardized tests.

Winners will receive certificates of recognition suitable for presentation at awards ceremonies and honorary designations appropriate for listing on their resumes. Monetary awards will be given to the top three applicants.

The purposes of this competition are:

(1) to encourage excellence in intellectual pursuits,

(2) to promote an appreciation for academic achievements, and

(3) to increase awareness of Phi Beta Kappa in our region.

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization, was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. For more than two hundred years, the Phi Beta Kappa Society has pursued its mission of fostering and recognizing excellence in liberal arts and sciences. The Society's distinctive emblem, a golden key, is widely recognized as a symbol of academic achievement.

Only selected colleges and universities that meet rigorous criteria set by the Phi Beta Kappa Society are granted chapters, and only outstanding students from those colleges and universities are invited to membership in Phi Beta Kappa.  In Texas there are three public universities with Phi Beta Kappa chapters: University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and Texas Tech University.

Famous members of Phi Beta Kappa include; Jimmy Carter, Isaac Asimov, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Kissinger, Kris Kristofferson, Jonas Salk, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louis Brandeis, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Florence Sabin, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Elizabeth Dole, Peyton Manning, and many others.

The Alumni Association has established a $40,000 endowment for the HSAEA at the Lubbock Area Foundation. Thanks to LAF's matching-grant agreement with the CH Foundation, our endowment will grow to $75,000 when we reach our $50,000 goal by March 2009.
