PBK Visiting Scholar at TTU on February 13, 2014

To members and friends of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico:

Please join the TTU PBK chapter at 6PM on Thursday, February 13th for a special lecture by 2014 PBK Visiting Scholar Dr. Penelope Boston. Dr. Boston speaks about "The Planet Within: Caves from Earth to Mars and Beyond" at 6pm at the TTU International Cultural Center (601 Indiana), with a reception for attendees hosted by the TTU PBK chapter at 5pm. Dr. Boston is a renowned speleologist (cave scientist) at New Mexico Tech, the associate director of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute, and a founder of the Mars Underground. She focuses on possible ways to explore Mars, as well as ways to grow crops there. She also researches extremophiles, organisms that live in “extreme” environments of cold, hot, or acid.

A message from Association President, Dr. Mary Jane Hurst:

Dear Fellow Phi Beta Kappans:

The annual meeting of the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico will be held on Saturday, October 5, in the private room of Stella's Restaurant, 4646 50th Street, Lubbock, Texas. Free refreshments (appetizers and desserts with iced tea, soda, or coffee) plus a cash bar will open at 1:30. The meeting will begin at 2:00. Guests are welcome.

Please see the attached Newsletter for meeting details and Association updates. Our October 5 annual meeting will feature a wonderful speaker, Mila Gibson, a commissioner on the Texas Commission for the Arts, and we may even hear some special music! We'll also elect officers and celebrate the successful conclusion of our scholarship fund drive.

Payment of annual or lifetime dues as well as donations to any Association endowments can be made using the attached form, or you can bring your check to the annual meeting. Sincere thanks go to all who have supported our Association and contributed to the endowments, especially during the fund drive over the past two years.
