Phi Theta Kappa Alumni News Briefs

Welcome to the second issue of Phi Theta Kappa's Alumni News Briefs!  In this newsletter we will share news of the associations and achievements of alumni members of the Society, as well as a variety of information of interest to alumni. This issue focuses on some of the outstanding projects of the Alumni Associations and provides information to alumni interested in running for election to the Alumni Advisory Council.

Please send your news to email alumni.office@ptk.org for inclusion in future issues.

1. Give the Promise of Education for Christmas
The Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program is working, assisting 10 students per year in the completion of a two-year degree. The need for more scholarships is critical in this difficult economy, and your investment is needed to provide more Phi Theta Kappa members with the means to achieve their educational goals. Send a contribution today to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation, 1625 Eastover Drive, Jackson, MS 39211 or go to http://www.ptk.org/foundation/invest.pdf, download the form and send it in with your contribution designated to the Leaders of Promise Scholarship.

2. Hugs for Kids
The Greater Northwest Region is asking all other alumni associations to join with them in their "Hugs for Kids" project to collect baby quilts and baby blankets to donate to local Children's Hospitals next spring. The GNWRAA alumni are providing patterns and directions and then collecting and delivering the quilts. The goal for the Greater Northwest Region is to collect 6 quilts from each chapter in the region, but the association hopes that other alumni associations will join in the effort to provide thousands of children with very special "hugs" made with love.  Contact Pamela Sorensen, Advisor for the Greater Northwest Region Alumni Association at pamela.sorensen@ptk.org for more information, patterns and directions.

3. Lights for Life

The Lambda of Illinois Alumni Association and Upsilon Mu Chapter at Illinois Central College recently sponsored the "Lights for Life" service project centering on conquering cancer. The purpose of the campaign was to show how proper diet, exercise and early detection can prevent the spread of cancer. On the evening of October 10, 2002, a special luminary remembrance ceremony was held in the courtyard on the campus. Sixty-two luminaries were lit, the names of loved ones affected by cancer were read aloud, and a cancer survivor was the guest speaker during the ceremony. A total of $386 was raised and donated to the American Cancer Society. Contact Lambda of Illinois President Leah Leas at leahleas@yahoo.com for more information.

4. Virtuoso

Phi Theta Kappa's Middle States Region, in partnership with The League of Innovation for the Community College, has announced plans to publish Virtuoso, an anthology of creative writing honoring two-year college educators and the two-year college experience. Phi Theta Kappa members, advisors and alumni may submit manuscripts for Virtuoso.  Entries should be sent to Middle States advisor Robert Saldarini by January 15, 2003. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top member entries of $1000, $400, and $200. For complete information on submissions, prizes and entry criteria, go to www.ptkms.org/special/virtuoso/index.htm. Contact Middle States Regional Alumni Association President Ella Rue at ella.rue@ptk.org for more information.
