Phi Theta Kappa Alumni News Briefs

Happy New Year and welcome to the third issue of Phi Theta Kappa's Alumni News Briefs. In this newsletter we will share news of the associations and achievements of alumni members of the Society, as well as a variety of information of interest to alumni. This issue focuses on dates and deadlines, as well as some of the ways that alumni may continue to serve the two-year chapters.

Please send your news to alumni.office@ptk.org for inclusion in future issues!

1. Alumni Association Annual Reports

Alumni Association Annual Report Forms have been emailed to all alumni association advisors and presidents, and must be submitted to the Development Office by March 1. Alumni Associations must submit an Annual Report every year to remain in Active status; charters are  retired for associations remaining inactive for 5 years. Is your Alumni Association officially recognized? Check the directory of active associations at http://www.ptk.org/alumni/al_intro.htm.

2. Alumni Association Award of Merit

This award recognizes an alumni association that has been exemplary in meeting the mission of Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Associations. To be considered for the Alumni Association Award of Merit, associations must submit the Annual Report and include a written essay of no more than 500 words outlining the association's goals and objectives for 2002 and a description of how these objectives were met. For further information, contact Development Assistant Denise Halbach at denise.halbach@pkt.org.

3. Service to the Chapters

The two-year active chapters are working on their Hallmark Award Entries, due to Headquarters by February 21. Alumni may assist the chapters by proofreading applications and essays. Why not call the chapter advisor and offer your services?

4. Transfer Mentoring

Cerritos College's Beta Alpha Beta Chapter in Norwalk California inducted 125 new members to their chapter in November of 2002 and asked the Nevada/California Region Alumni Association to mentor their chapter in preparing their members for transfer, allowing the alumni an opportunity to contribute their expertise and experience to the new members. Alumni Associations interested in the process of Transfer Mentoring may contact Adam Dince, Nevada/California Region Alumni Association President, at adam.dince@gccccd.net or visit http://www.ncraa.org, and click on the Arcturus Mentoring Program.

5. Alumni Advisory Council Candidacy Forms Available

The Alumni Advisory Council meets each year at Convention and provides advice and assistance on Society alumni issues and concerns to the Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters staff and to the Board of Directors. For information on the duties of the Council and requirements for candidacy go to http://convention.ptk.org/alumni/al_advcouncil.htm.

6. Keep Your Leadership Shills Sharp

Is there a recognized definition or theory of leadership that corresponds to your personal style? Learn more at  http://leadership.ptk.org/leaddev_news.htm. Alumni can continue to sharpen leadership skills by reviewing the online leadership lessons, posted twice each month on the Phi Theta Kappa web site.  Leadership News Briefs appear every two weeks in the Golden Key News Briefs and contain articles that focus on developing qualities and skills to be an effective leader. This is one of the many continuing benefits of membership available to all Phi Theta Kappa Alumni.

7. Another Alumni Benefit

USA TODAY, the nation's newspaper, announces a substantial subscription discount for Phi Theta Kappa members and alumni. The offer is made in conjunction with the USA TODAY/Phi Theta Kappa Case Study Challenge, which is now underway! Society members and alumni are eligible to receive a 13-week, daily newspaper subscription for only $29.25, a 24% discount off the regular newsstand price. Phi Theta Kappa chapters are also eligible for special volume discounts on subscriptions to 10, 15, 20, or more papers delivered 2 or 3 days a week with rates as low as $105 for 2-day/week delivery of 10 papers for 15 weeks. Alumni associations may wish to donate funds so chapters can receive the subscriptions; Chapters could then place USA TODAY newspapers across campus. To sign up online for chapter and individual subscriptions, visit http://www.usatoday.com/educate/challenge/subscribe.htm.

The Development Department exists to serve Phi Theta Kappa Alumni and their Associations. Please contact us with your questions, comments, news, suggestions or requests. Call 601.984.3540 or email alumni.office@ptk.org.
