Welcome to Phi Theta Kappa's Alumni eNewsletter, sharing news of the alumni associations, achievements of alumni members of the Society, and a variety of information of interest to alumni. Please send your news to Alumni.Office@ptk.org for inclusion in future issues!

 

1. Pi of Texas Assists Officer Retreat

Pi of Texas Alumni Association at Texas A&M Commerce assisted with the District II Officer Retreat on June 19, 2004. The Texas Region is separated into five districts and the Pi of Texas Alumni Association hosts and assists with officer retreats for three of them. Sixty-eight student members from District II chapters in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth Metroplex attended the District II Retreat. Pi of Texas Alumni Association members presented workshops on 5-Star Programming, "How To Do that 'Chrono' Thing" explaining chronological lists and how to use them for historical purposes, "How to Create a Comprehensive Hallmark Program" and "Phi Theta Kappa 101." Pi of Texas also provided copies of the Chapter Resource Manual for all members in attendance, 5-Star information and 2004-2006 Program Guides for the Honors Study Topic and International Service Programs. Alumni Association Directory Enhanced

Names and email links of Alumni Association Presidents have now been added to the contact information for each Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association listed in the Alumni Association Directory. Alumni associations should check the Directory to ensure that their records are up to date and correct names appear in the Directory. Contact the alumni office to update association records.

Honors Institute Attendees Support Leaders of Promise Scholarships

Phi Theta Kappa members and advisors attending the 2004 International Honors Institute contributed a total of $644 for the Society's Leaders of Promise Scholarship Fund. Phi Theta Kappa's International Officer Team led efforts to raise funds for Leaders of Promise, continuing an Honors Institute tradition. Leaders of Promise Scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded to thirty members annually to assist in funding associate degree studies. The Leaders of Promise program is supported by donations from Society constituencies and proceeds from Phi Theta Kappa's Affinity bankcard program sponsored by MBNA. Governor Appoints Alumna to Indiana Commission of Higher Education

Indiana Governor Joe Kernan recently appointed Norma Fewell, Alpha Phi Pi, Ivy Tech State College alumna, to a two-year term on a thirteen-member Task Force on College Affordability that will make policy recommendations aimed at ensuring that college remains affordable for Indiana residents. The new task force includes representation from both public and private higher education institutions, as well as legislators and the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana. Norma was named a New Century Scholar and Guistwhite Scholar in 2004 and also served as an Indiana Regional Officer.

Zeta of New York Elects New Officers

Zeta of New York Region Alumni Association elected new Executive Committee members at Camp Zeta I in June. Camp Zeta I is a weekend of fun and fellowship as well as activity in support of The American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge. Camp Zeta II is scheduled for August 20-22 at the Lake Chalet Campgrounds in Bridgewater, NY. The weekend is like Camp Zeta I and is full of fun and fellowship, but with a more relaxed environment. Missouri Region Alumni Association walks for Cerebral Palsy

Members of the Missouri Alumni Association gathered on a rainy day in May in a suburban city park, along with approximately 100 dedicated walkers, local radio and TV personalities, St. Louis Rams football players and city officials for the first annual "Rock, Roll & Stroll" fun walk sponsored by United Cerebral Palsy of Greater St. Louis. MAA members volunteered their services for the event in a variety of roles including event planning, walker registration, merchandise sales, money counting, event set up and tear down and registration supervision. The event raised more than $5,600 to support much needed programs and services for disabled people served by United Cerebral Palsy of Greater St. Louis. Alumna Flies with the Blue Angels

Sandy Gallant, Rho Tau Chapter alumna and past Distinguished Chapter President Award Recipient, joined News 25 WEEK-TV in Peoria, Illinois in January 2001 as a producer and is now a full-time reporter. In July, Sandy flew with the elite pilots of the Blue Angels U.S. Naval Flight Demonstration Team and said it was the greatest experience of her life. View her report on the experience.
