1. Alumni Create "Stress Free" Zone for Mock Chapter Participants

Zeta of New York Region Alumni Association created a "stress free" zone at the recent Mock Chapter activities for the New York Region. An area was set up where Mock Chapter participants could come to relieve the stress of working on hallmark essays, communications reports and press releases. Members of the alumni association provided snacks, beverages, coffee and stress relief toys such as footballs, bouncy balls, cards and trivia questions, and several members of Zeta and the 2003-2004 Regional Officers Team stayed up until the wee hours to assist chapter members by answering questions. Contact Amy Flagler, Zeta of New York Public Relations Officer for more information.

2. NCRAA Participates in Annual Cancer Fundraiser

On September 19th, the Nevada/California Region Alumni Association participated in the San Diego Professionals Against Cancer (SDPAC) Annual Fundraiser. Over the past 8 years this event has raised over $100,000 for cancer and this year over $30,000 was raised. The fundraiser has an average attendance of 3,000 people who come from all over Southern California to participate. The NCRAA coordinated 17 Phi Theta Kappa volunteers including alumni and chapter members from Grossmont College, Cuyamaca College and San Diego State University. The NCRAA group has the largest group of volunteers coming from a single source and this is the second year that the NCRAA was asked specifically to volunteer. For more information, contact Adam Dince, NCRAA President.

3. Pi of Texas hosts Texas Region Leadership Conference

Texas A&M University-Commerce and the Pi of Texas Alumni Association hosted the Texas Region Leadership Conference, September 25-27, 2003. The focus of the conference was eight books that analyzed different aspects of leadership, including The Leadership Challenge, Global Leadership: The Next Generation, The Inner Work of Leaders: Leadership as a Habit of Mind, and The Female Advantage: Women's Way of Leadership, and four others. Participants weren't always immersed in books and group sessions, however. On Thursday night members enjoyed a rousing game of spoons, fellowship and the Marketplace, which allowed chapters to raise money by selling Phi Theta Kappa apparel. Friday's dance, preceded by a salsa lesson, was a way to bond with other Phi Theta Kappans, and chapters were invited to participate in the Pi of Texas tailgate party and Texas A&M football game on Saturday, where the association took third place in the spirit contest.

4. Alumna Named to Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges Board of Directors

Darla Masters, Alpha Beta Psi Chapter alumna and former member of the Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Advisory Council, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges, and has also received a $5,000 Brandon Burlsworth Memorial Scholarship at the University of Arkansas. She is currently Executive Assistant to the President at Rich Mountain Community College and President of the Oklahoma/Arkansas Regional Alumni Association.

5. Alumnus Elected Chair of California College Republicans

Michael Davidson, an All-USA Team Nominee and Texas Phi Theta Kappa alumnus, was recently unanimously elected to serve as Statewide Chairman of the California College Republicans. Michael was a Phi Theta Kappa Washington, DC Intern and is also featured in the new "Good As Gold" Video. Michael is currently a senior at UC-Berkeley and was recently interviewed on CNN.

6. Alumni Associations: Report your new members to Headquarters

Alumni are a vital part of Phi Theta Kappa's future, supporting the people, programs and priorities of the Society and ensuring the future success of new two-year chapter members. So that new alumni continue to receive news of the Society and its programs, alumni associations should report all new alumni association members to Headquarters by sending their names and addresses to the Alumni Office at Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters, P.O. Box 13729, Jackson, MS 39236. For a reporting form for alumni members contact Development Department Assistant Denise Halbach.

7. Right Education Benefit Available to Members, Chapters and Alumni

The Right Education (TRE), a Phi Theta Kappa benefits partner, has combined The Learning and Homework Accelerator software with premium internet access. Members, advisors and alumni may now obtain software that helps develop and improve writing skills as part of the TRE Internet (TRE-I) service package, all at the same price as most standard internet services offering access alone. TRE-I is also an integral part of the TRE Education and Funding Initiative, committed to the goal of providing cutting-edge education software to 1,000,000 underprivileged students and 1,000 under-funded schools over the next two years. Choosing TRE Internet (TRE-I) as your internet service provider contributes to this project. Additionally, each person who signs up for TRE-I benefits the Phi Theta Kappa chapter of his or her choice with a credit of $1.00 per month. Phi Theta Kappa also receives 60 cents per month for each subscriber. These funds provide scholarships and other benefits for members. For more details on the benefits offered by The Right Education, visit Get Connected.
