Message from the President

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the Society of Plastics Engineers Texas Tech Student Chapter (SPE-TTU) website. SPE is a professional organization dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge and information regarding plastics. SPE has more than 20000 members from both industry and academia and supports 120 student chapters in universities all over the world. The Texas Tech student chapter, a registered student organization, was chartered on September 24, 2005, in order to create awareness regarding plastics among students and the local community.  Furthermore, the chapter provides our members with the opportunities to enhance their career prospects through interactions with industrial professionals and academic researchers.

The chapter has recently completed a busy and successful year. A lecture series was conducted with a view to highlight current technological and industrial trends in the plastics sector. A Bernoulli blower was built by the members and sent to the Woodlands Children Museum for scientific exhibition as a gift, which indicated the willingness of the chapter to get involved in external educational activities. A trip to Palo Duro Canyon provided a good opportunity for the members to get to know each other better. Furthermore, six scholarships of $500 were awarded to graduate (4) and undergraduate (2) student members. The chapter also sponsored 11 members to attend SPE conferences such as the International Polyolefin Meeting (Houston, TX) and the Annual Technical Conference (Cincinnati, OH). Due to the enthusiasm and dedication of all our members, the chapter was selected for the Outstanding Student Chapter Award for year 2007 by the national SPE.

This year, we will continue the lecture series, the scholarships and the conference programs. We have also planned several exciting social events and activities which will promote communication and interaction among all our members. Increase and diversification of membership is one of our goals. All future scientists and engineers with interest in plastics are welcome to join the organization. As the President of the Chapter for 2007-2008, I sincerely invite you to join us, if you are not a member yet.  I am sure you will find our chapter to be of great value for your current study as well as your future career.  For more information, please visit our website at http://www.4spe.org or email me at mx.luo@ttu.edu.

Sincerely,

Mingxiang Luo,                                                                                       President of SPE-TTU
