Sabre Flight Drill Team is composed of elite AFROTC Det 820 cadets who have each completed "kNIFESHIP". Cadets may only become Sabres when they have successfully mastered kNIFESHIP, in which they are awarded the black and red cord and drill team ribbon. Upon completion of kNIFESHIP, new Sabres become part of a very close brotherhood that draws its strength from teamwork. kNIFESHIP : Cadets pledging SFDT are called "knives". During kNIFESHIP, cadets undergo one semester of intense training and evaluation. Each "kNIFE class" must come together as a team and draw upon its own strength to successfully complete training. Knifing enables cadets to build and perfect leadership skills, physical fitness, drill, knowledge, military bearing and teamwork. Upon completion, members of the kNIFE class are a closely bonded team consisting of friends you will have for life. KNIFESHIP provides a means for cadets to test their physical and mental limits and push beyond them. In conclusion, kNIFESHIP produces better leaders, followers, cadets, students, and ultimately better officers for the U.S. Air Force. Sabres : Each member of SFDT is a brother/sister to the next. Once you become a Sabre, you will always be a Sabre, no matter where you are. Upon induction, kNIVES become Sabres and part of this extensive brotherhood. Sabres are distinguished by wear of the black and red cord and performing duties with excellence. The most coveted award a Sabre can receive is the Blue Beret, which is awarded by other Blue Berets to those who exhibit outstanding performance. SFDT also has a Big Sis that is a member of Silver Wings and provides support to the kNIFE classes and team. It is every Sabres duty to remain "high speed" both physically and mentally and to utilize teamwork in accomplishing goals. SFDT members perform precision drill using the U.S. Cavalry Sabre and M1 Garand rifle. SFDT regularly performs at drill competitions, sporting events, military events, pageants, events coordinated with Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings, and many other occasions. SFDT also holds an annual JROTC drill competition. The SFDT performs drill in accordance to AFCWR 50-5 for individual drill with arms and AF 35-10 for special drill with arms. Team Mascot : The SFDT mascot is the North American F-86A Sabre Jet. During the Korean War, the Sabre had a victory ration of 10 to 1 against Russian built MIG fighters. Miscellaneous Info:
