Article I (Name) 

The name of the organization shall be Sri Lankan Students Association at Texas Tech University, with the abbreviation SLSA, hereinafter referred to as the Association.

 

 Article II (Purpose)

 This Association shall be a nonprofit organization with the following objectives.

 1.To promote awareness about Sri Lanka within Texas Tech University, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and South Plains communities.

2. To address the needs of the Sri Lankan students of Texas Tech University and their families.

3. To work in partnership with the Sri Lankan community in Lubbock and vicinity to conduct activities that foster good relationships with the south plains community

 

Article III (Memberships)

 Membership of the Association is open to anyone who has an interest in Sri Lanka, its people, its culture, and its development.  Membership will have the following classes:

 

 1.Member

Students of Texas Tech University and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center are eligible to become members of the Association.

2.Affiliate Member

Affiliate membership is open to family members of Texas Tech students and others in the Texas Tech and South Plains communities

3.Honorary Member

The Association may award honorary memberships to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Association

 

 The general meetings of the association are open to all classes of membership.  Only the Members are eligible to vote or hold office in the Association.  A Member in any of the membership classes identified above, may be expelled with unanimous consent of the Executive Committee with reason(s) for such expulsion being determined by the Executive Committee and approved by a majority of the membership.

 

Article IV (Executive Committee)

Section A:

The association shall have the following 6 Executive Committee members: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, SOAC Representative and Web Master.

 

Section B:

The officers shall be elected by a majority of votes..  Elections shall be held once a year at an Annual General Meeting held at the beginning of each Fall semester.  Any member of the Executive Committee may resign voluntarily.  In the event a position in the Executive Committee is made vacant before the next Annual General Meeting, that position will be filled immediately, after calling for nominations, followed by the regular election procedure

 

Section C:

Offices shall have the following duties.

President:

  • Preside over meetingsScheduling of meetings

  • Being the liaison with the Faculty Advisor

  • Serve as the spokesperson of the Association

Vice President:

  • Act as President in his/her absence

  • Chairs and oversees special assignments as assigned

Secretary:

  • Keeping and distributing information to members

  • Maintain membership lists

  • Maintain minutes of meetings

  • Arrange publicity for Association event

Treasurer:

  • Prepare the annual budget

  • Ensure that the Association works within its budget

  • Maintain accounts of the Association

  • Report on financial matters to the Executive Committee

SOAC Representative:

  • Serve as the representative of the SLSA at Student Government Association (SGA) meetings and Student Organization Advisory Committee (SOAC)

  • Serve as liaison between the Association and other Texas Tech organizations.

Web Master:

  • Maintain and the website for the association

  • Develop and maintain an e-mail list of the association membership

Section D:

Termination:

All officers of the Association are expected to maintain active participation of its activities.  Action may be taken by the Executive Committee to remove any inactive officers.   First, a warning letter will be sent to such an officer, and if the warning letter is ignored, that officer may be removed by a 2/3 majority of the Executive Committee..

  

Article V (Affiliations)

 Sri Lankan Students Association has no direct affiliation with any other organization either within the Texas Tech University System or outside it.  However, the Association may establish temporary affiliations with other organizations identified by the Executive Committee to conduct its activities.

  

Article VI (Proposed Activities)

The activities promoted, sponsored or organized by the Association may include the following:

  1. Provide assistance to Sri Lankan Students at Texas Tech University and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center

  2. Social activities for the membership

  3. Cultural and other entertainment activities to promote understanding about Sri Lanka within the community.

  4. Other activities that are of relevance to Sri Lanka as decided by the Executive Committee

 Article VII (Advisers)

 

Section A:

Faculty Adviser:

The faculty adviser will be chosen by the Executive Committee. He/She should be a faculty member of the Texas Tech University System.

Faculty adviser’s responsibilities include:

  1.  Meeting regularly with the Executive Committee to discuss organizational matters

  2. Assist in the settlement of disputes that may arise within the Executive Committee or the membership

  3. Overseeing the accounts maintained by the Association.

Section B:

Adviser:

The Adviser will be chosen by the Executive Committee. His/Her responsibilities will be to assist the faculty adviser with his/her duties.

 

Article VIII (Code of Conduct)

 All members agree to abide by the rules and regulations set forth in the Texas Tech Students Affairs Handbook, Code of Student Conduct.

 

Article IX. (Amendments)

 Amendments to the constitution will be adopted by a 2/3 majority voting of the members at a general meeting.
