Coastal areas of Sri Lanka have been
devastated by a Tsunami that has left more than 30,000 dead and over
1.5 million people (8% of the population) homeless. More than one
third of the deaths are reported to be children. It is also
estimated that at least 100,000 homes, and 200 schools have been
completely destroyed. A relief operation of unprecedented magnitude
is currently under way. Immediate relief measures are presently in
progress to prevent the spread of epidemic diseases and disease
related deaths. Medium term measures, in the near future, will
include the supply of essential food, clothing and temporary
shelters to the homeless. In the next stage of long term relief
measures it is currently estimated that several billion US dollars
will be needed for re-building houses, schools, hospitals, and
infrastructure. Over ten million US dollars are additionally needed
to set up and maintain orphanages, provide school supplies and
essential school items for children of displaced and homeless
families.
Every cent counts as the country fights the horror of this crisis.
