General Information

The Texas Tech Equestrian Team is a student organization and club sport at Texas Tech University.  Membership is open to any undergraduate student at Texas Tech, regardless of major, classification or horse experience. The Equestrian team is an organization for students who are interested in horses, improving their riding skills, and collegiate equestrian competition.  We have hunt seat and western teams and compete in several events, including: hunt seat equitation on the flat and over fences, western horsemanship, and reining.  Riders may be on one or both discipline show teams.

The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) was founded on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows, regardless of their financial status or riding level.  The uniqueness of collegiate equestrian competition is that students ride horses that are furnished by the host college and chosen at random.  The use of personal tack is not allowed and schooling of the horse is not permitted.  The theory behind this structure is to equalize variables of the competition and test the horsemanship of the contestants, not necessarily choose the best horse.  It is a true test of horsemanship.  All riders are placed into skill levels based on riding and show experience. This ensures that you compete against riders with a similar background.  Classes range from the walk/trot division for new riders to the open division for more experienced showmen.  Riders earn points for placing in their classes.  If a rider accumulates the required points, she advances to the next division and qualifies for the post-season championships.  IHSA competition advances through the national level.

Aside from horse shows, we also participate in fundraisers, community service projects and other community events.  Our team is a very affordable way to stay involved with horses, even without a horse of your own.  Team members pay team dues of $100 per year or $60 per semester, while competing members pay an additional $30 IHSA national dues annually.  At shows, the team pays for hotel and van rental.  Riders pay for the remaining entry fees, food and show clothing.  It is a lot less expensive than competing with a horse of your own.  Currently, the Texas Tech Equestrian Team operates on sponsorships and limited school funding.  Each actively showing member is expected to garner sponsorships to offset our spending.  This enables the team to pay for more of our rider's expenses and limit the individual out-of-pocket expense.

The Texas Tech Equestrian Team practices at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center.  We hold mandatory official practices weekly.  The Texas Tech Equestrian Center is located off of Upland Avenue and West 50th Street in Wolfforth, TX (just outside the Lubbock City Limit).  Please contact Coach Robin Morris at tech_equestrian@yahoo.com for more information.

Prospective members who are interested in bringing their horse(s) to Texas Tech with them can check out our boarding list of local barns in the Lubbock area that are recommended by the team.
