Texas Tech Equestrian Places 4th at National Championship

 WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass.

Texas Tech Equestrians participated in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships in West Springfield, Massachusetts on May 3-6.

Western team member Allison Griest competed in Intermediate Horsemanship and was awarded 4th place.  She competed against the top 11 riders in her division in the nation.  In the Intercollegiate circuit, riders draw a horse a few minutes prior to their class.  They are not allowed to practice riding on the horse before entering the show arena, and they are judged on their horsemanship as well as how they handle a horse they have never ridden before.  Griest is the team Secretary and thoroughly enjoyed letting the New England crowd know that Texas Tech University was in Massachusetts.

Western team member and student coach Robin Morris placed 11th in the AQHA High Point Rider Class.  Morris rode in a rail phase as well as a reining phase and competed against the top rider from each region.

English team member Julia Lindholm had a strong ride against 17 other riders in her Intermediate Flat Division.

The Texas Tech Equestrian Team is excited to have had the opportunity to send three riders to Nationals.  The team is continually growing every year and is excited to begin a new successful season this August.  Individuals interested in joining the Equestrian Team should visit the team website www.orgs.ttu.edu/techequestrianteam or email the team at tech_equestrian@yahoo.com.  Riders from beginner to advanced are welcome.

Equestrian team sends three to nationals
BY GUL SINGH
LUBBOCK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Julia Lindholm fell off a horse one week before her regional-qualifying equestrian competition.
The Texas Tech equestrian team member tore all the ligaments off her right thumb, but that didn't stop her from qualifying to compete at the regional level.

Lindholm is among three members of the Tech equestrian team who will compete in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's national championship May 3-6 in West Springfield, Mass.

"This is something that will stay with me my whole life," said Lindholm, a junior animal science major from Austin.

It's the first time in the school's history that three competitors are going to the national championship, Lindholm said.

The equestrian team is a club sport featuring about 10 active English riders and 14 active Western riders.
The two riding styles differ in their saddle and riding technique. The English style has a flat saddle and is judged on horsemanship and jumping. The Western style has a saddle with a horn on the front and is judged on horsemanship and reining.

The team is a Tech-sponsored organization but doesn't receive any Tech funding.
"We fund ourselves through fundraising and sponsorships," said Allison Griest, the team's secretary and a Western rider advancing to the national championship.

The team has competed in events in Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Tennessee and Colorado.

"We are a close team, and we love doing what we do," Griest said.

Robin Morris, the third team member to qualify for the nationals, received the highest points in her zone while competing in the open division, which is the most advanced of the six divisions.

She is also the Western team's student coach and has competed in nationals in the past.
Both teams are student-led and thrive on cooperation rather than competition.

"If we don't win, we would rather see someone from our own team win," Lindholm said.

Robin Morris, Tech Equestrian Team’s Western student coach, is Zone 7, Region 1’s High Point Rider.  Morris rides in Open Horsemanship and Open Reining in the Western Division, both of which are the highest levels in the IHSA Western circuit.  The honor of High Point Rider is the highest honor a competitor can receive.  Morris will compete twice on May 4th at the National Competition.  She has previously attended Nationals and been awarded 3rd place at the National Open Horsemanship competition in 2005.

Western Rider Allison Griest participated in the National Western Semi-Final Championship hosted by Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN on March 24th.  Her class, Intermediate Western Horsemanship, had 14 competitors representing 7 regions.  Participants needed to place 4th or higher to advance to Nationals.  Griest was awarded 2nd place Reserve Champion honors and will proudly compete in the Intermediate Horsemanship National class on May 4th

Equestrian team members Alicia Daughtery and Jessica Jones also represented Tech at the National Semi-Finals event and finished strongly with 5th place honors in Advanced Horsemanship and Beginner Horsemanship, respectively.

English Rider Julia Lindholm participated in Zone 7, Region 1’s Zone Championships this past Saturday, March 31, hosted by West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.  At Saturday’s show Lindholm was awarded 2nd place honors in her class: Intermediate Flat.  She will compete in the Intermediate Flat National class on May 5th.

English Rider and English student coach Alexandra Miller also participated in Saturday’s Zone Championships.  She was awarded 3rd place honors in Novice Flat.  While riders needed to place 1st or 2nd to advance to the National Championship, Miller is happy to have had the opportunity to represent the team.

Morris, Griest, and Lindholm hope to ride away with National Honors.  The Tech Equestrian Team is excited to send so many riders to IHSA Nationals, and the team hopes to send more riders next year and in the years to come.
