Iron and Flesh

The struggle, the conflict, the toil.
When iron and flesh meet, the outcome’s unpredictable.
They fight for dominance, they clash for preeminence.
To prepare for this encounter, the flesh pays the toll.

Iron:  cold, inanimate, deceptively controlling.
Flesh:  hot, blood beneath’s furiously boiling.
Who will win?  Let the battle begin.
Or could this just be a fight from within?

Nevertheless, the iron resists.
It fights back with a ruthless fist.
The flesh is strong, it is hard, it is trained.
The power from within can’t be contained.

The iron bends, it creaks and it rattles.
Today the flesh will be triumphant in battle.
The air is thick with sweat, chalk and rust.
The flesh only knows to do what it must.

The iron descends and lets its power be known.
The crushing force yields a strenuous groan.
But the flesh responds in a relentless fashion.
Then the iron ascends in a violent reaction.

The iron lays still in its cradle of defeat,
The flesh explodes with victory knowing the iron’s been beat.
The struggle is over, the conflict is done,
The toil was worth it for the flesh has just won,

Even though the battle’s been won, the war is not done.
The iron will respond with heavier opponents to choose from.
There will be days when the iron will win, and the flesh will retreat,
But the flesh will not quit until the iron’s been beat.
