The Iron Raider Powerlifting team traveled to the University of Texas in Austin on November 17th, 2006 for the USAPL Longhorn Open Powerlifting meet. Members that attended the meet were Bobby Warren (Coach/Handler), Brian Warren (Team Captain/Handler), Nick King (132), Nick Brittain (165), Daron Chatham (198), and Michael Bristol (198). Those who competed were in their respective weight classes and competed as Collegiate lifters pursuing the needed qualifying total for USAPL Collegiate Nationals in April of 2007.

Meet Breakdown:

We arrived on friday night at about 7:45 pm, luckily making it to early weigh-in just 10 minutes before they stopped the check-in process. (Thanks to Kim Beckwith) Everyone made their weight with plenty of room to spare... too much room actually. Gear check was delayed until the next morning due to our late arrival, but at least everyone could eat and not worry about the scale the following morning.

The meet was held on two platforms with 6 flights of lifters per platform that would lift throughout the day (and evening, and night....). It was a very long day for our guys, but everyone kept their focus and got the job done.

The attempts went as follows:

Nick King (60kg, 132lb class)
Squat -
1st - 180kg(396.7lbs.) - great opening attempt, three white lights
2nd - 190kg(418.7lbs.) - solid second, with one red light for questionable depth
3rd - 200kg(440.7lbs.) - sunk it very deep, and proved to be a bit too much on this day, but a great effort no doubt
200kg
Bench Press -
1st - 107.5kg(236.7lbs.) - perfect opener, like nothing was on the bar
2nd - 115kg(253.5lbs) - another solid attempt, three white lights
3rd - 122.5kg(270lbs.) - what we thought was 264, was actually 270 for a huge PR! - good lift Nick
Deadlift -
1st - 175kg(385.7lbs.) - three white lights, conquered the QT
2nd - 187.5kg(413.2lbs.) - had a slight lean back on the lockout, and lost balance but luckily had already gotten the "down" command, good lift
3rd - 195kg(429.7lbs.) - after a long day of lifting, this proved to be just a touch more than was left in the tank
TOTAL -
500kg(1102.4lbs.) - this was the goal for the meet and we hit it right on the money, Great Job NICK! This actually puts Nick in the current top 25 in the Open Ipf World Standings (Regardless of age/division)!

Nick Brittain - (75kg/165lb.)
Squat -
1st - 185kg(407.7lbs.) - three whites, great opener
2nd - 197.5kg(435.2) - sunken very deep, strong lift
3rd - 207.5kg(457.2) - little shaky, but got it done, good lift
Bench Press -
1st - 110kg(242.5lbs.) - another great opener, but not as easy as we'd planned
2nd - 120kg(264.5) - much better than the first attempt, found the groove a bit better, good lift
3rd - 127.5kg(281) - had to bring the intensity and focus up a little for this attempt, but the WHOLE team got behind him on this one and he took care of business, huge PR, good lift
Deadlift -
1st - 220kg(485lbs.) - three whites, hit well above the QT
2nd - 235kg(518) - strong lift, another personal best!
3rd - 245kg(540) - this attempt was 8 hours after his first squat attempt, and there wasn't much fuel left to pull such a weight, no lift
TOTAL -
570kg(1256.7lbs.) - well above the QT and 8 for 9 on the day

Daron Chatham - (90kg/198lb)
Squat -
1st - 195kg(429.7lbs.) - very deep squat, and a perfect opener, 3 whites
2nd - 207.5kg(457.2) - another solid lift, looked good for another 30 pounds
3rd - 220kg(485) - hit depth, got the up call, but stalled on the way up and barely missed this lift, no lift
Bench Press -
1st - 132.5kg(292lbs.) - warm-ups ran a bit long, and we were rushed to the platform, but a good lift
2nd - 142.5kg(314) - little too fast on the descent, causing a little more pause than desired, no lift
3rd - 142.4kg(314) - after a little discussion and refocussing, Daron stepped up and DESTROYED this lift, best of his 3 attempts, good lift
Deadlift -
1st - 217.5kg(479.5lbs.) - easy opener, three whites
2nd - 230kg(507) - another strong lift
3rd - 240kg(529) - gutted out the lift to the top, just to fall short of lockout due to knee flexion, questionable call, but no lift
TOTAL -
580kg(1278.8lbs.) - pretty good day, just over the QT of 1275lbs

Michael Bristol - (90kg/198lb)
Squat -
1st - 210kg(462.7lbs.) - good opener, three whites
2nd - 222.5kg(490.5) - another strong attempt, good lift
3rd - 232.5kg(512.5) - very hard lift, but Mike stepped up to make yet another successful attempt
Bench Press -
1st - 130kg(286.5lbs.) - again, we were rushed onto the platform, shirt wasn't even set, but the weight wasn't a problem, good lift
2nd - 140kg(308.5) - Mike was much more prepared for this attempt, good lift
3rd - 147.5kg(325) - another solid lift, strong lockout, good lift
Deadlift -
1st - 205kg(451.7lbs.) - good lift, attained the much needed QT
2nd - 217.5kg(479.5) - kept his focus and intensity, destroying yet another attempt, good lift
3rd - 225kg(496) - ripped it right up, he couldn't be stopped today, good lift
TOTAL
605kg(1333.9lbs.) - Great day for Mike, went 9 for 9 and earned his spot at Collegiate Nationals in the Spring as well

Overall the meet was a great day for the Iron Raider Powerlifting Team, and I am very proud of these guys. Everyone helped out when needed and I feel like this was a HUGE jump in the right direction for our team. A big thanks to everyone for taking care of business and adding four more lifters to our list of qualified members. Brian did a great job of helping out and making sure noone was left unattended to, be sure to give him some props.

I assure you that these lifters are going to make great progress in the upcoming months and put on quite a show at Nationals in the Spring. The best is still yet to come. I am just glad to have the opportunity to be able to sit back and watch the show!

It's a great day to be an Iron Raider! Keep up the good work.

Bobby Warren
