What is Powerlifting?

Powerlifting is a sport comprised of three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. With a straight bar loaded with plates of weight and stacked on the back, these competitors boldly challenge gravity as they descend, as if they were sitting in an imaginary chair.

At the point where their hip is even with their knee and the top of the quadricep is parallel to the ground, the squat can then be completed by exploding upward to a full upright position. Next, the lifter lies flat on a bench, and takes the loaded bar with extended arms over their chest. The bar is then lowered to a position touching the chest, and once the bar has come to a complete pause, t he lifter then blasts the bar to its starting place, arms fully extended.

Finally, with the loaded bar resting on the ground, the lifter approaches the bar, positions their feet, grabs hold, and stands erect. This is certainly a sport that requires an enormous amount of strength but also the amazing ability to mentally focus and conquer challenges head on. During competition, each lifter gets three attempts at each of the three lifts, and their best lifts are added together for a total which is ranked for places.
