Tech improves to 3-0
Texas Tech Mens Rugby Team
(2-0) traveled to Dallas this past weekend to take
on the groundhogs of the University of Dallas (0-2).
It was a beautiful sunny day for rugby as both teams
took the field. Tech came out hot scoring 3 trys in
the first 12 minutes of the match from precision
offloads by the forwards and great passing by the
backs. The “Hoggies” did not give up though, they
fought back hard creating many turnovers at the
breakdowns. Well placed kicks by the UD scrumhalf
pinned Tech back inside their half of the field for
most of the remained of the half. The hoggies
managed to break through and answer with a score of
their own. Tech answered back with great ball
retention and many hard runs. Taylor Burkhalter was
able to cross the try line but the referee called it
held up. A few minutes later Jerdal “Biggie”
Whitaker powered his way across the line for a
score.
Even though Tech already had
the bonus points and a nice lead at halftime they
seemed exhausted because every breakdown and every
meter gained was forcefully challenged by the
University of Dallas. Tech had a miscalculation on
the opening kickoff of the second half where the
ball ended up off the ground and into the UD prop’s
hands where he took it straight up the field,
breaking tackles. After a few more passes to
supporting players, UD had a quick score to put Tech
back on their heels once again. Tech woke up and
started making tackles and slowed the momentum of
the “hoggies”. The rest of the half was just like
the end of the first half; hard fought in each
aspect of the game. Freshman flyhalf Robert Poyser
put a few kicks through the line to pin UD back
inside their 22meter where eventually Tech found
their way across the try line for two more scores
before the final whistle blew.
Final score- Texas Tech 38,
Univ. of Dallas 12.
Both teams were fortunate to
have enough players for a full second side match
where many guys got a chance to prove themselves.
The second side match was much like the first; hard
fought right up until the final whistle. The game
ended in a well earned tie 5 -5.
Coach Renaldo Arroyo on his
teams play: “While the match did not come out
exactly as we planned, we found out that our guys
coming off the bench are ready and willing to play.
Ultimately, we will benefit from the lessons we
learned on Saturday.”
We would like to thank the
University of Dallas “Hoggies” for the great game.
Their fans were amazing; you could really feel the
support for their team and it made for an excellent
atmosphere for some great rugby.
Tech will now finish up the
fall semester with a home match versus last year’s
TRU runner-up TCU.

Tech has back to
back 50 point games with a big win over power house
Baylor
Anticipation
was at an all time high this past weekend in Lubbock as Texas Tech
hosted the Baylor Bears. Both teams were coming off season opening
wins in cup play. Baylor was coming off winning the Cowtown Tournament and beating last year's TRU
runner-up TCU 25- 15, while Tech took it to Angelo
State 52-0. It was a beautiful, sunny, and
surprisingly windless day for rugby in Lubbock for
this 12pm kickoff.
Both teams
came out hitting hard in all phases of the game.
Baylor won many turnover balls early by counter
rucking and kept Tech on its heels by pinning them
on their half for much of the first 20 minutes. Finally
the Tech inside center Marc DeCharmoy broke through
the Baylor defensive line and then passed it off to
winger Manak Basra for the score. Tech then started
pouncing on Baylor with DeCharmoy breaking through 2
more times for scores. Just before halftime Tech had
Baylor on its heels just inside their own 22m when
flyhalf Robert Poyser kicked a high cross kick to
hit Manak Basra in stride for the bonus point try.
Halftime Score was 28-0.
Second half
started like the first with more of the same hard
running, tackling and rucking by both teams. Baylor
was putting together many phases and battling back
before one pass was picked off by Manak Basra and
returned for a 60m score. Baylor was still not
giving up and punched in a score a few minutes later
with some fancy passing. Tech managed to put in two
more scores late in the match by 8man Reid Curry and
outside center Jared Baird. The game was hard fought
right up to the final whistle. Great rugby played by
both sides. Final score Texas Tech 50, Baylor 7.
Manak
Basra on the game-
“We knew
this would be a big game for us because Baylor is a
physical team and they are a good test for us too
since they won Cowtown.
We rose to the occasion
and showed we are here to compete. We still have
some things to work on before finishing out our
semester. ”
Forwards
coach Renaldo Arroyo on his teams play over the past
two games-
"The
team's character and confidence seems to be building
every week as they become more comfortable with each
other's style of play. You can see players beginning
to buy into the system we want to play; hard, fast,
and disciplined rugby."
Tech now
has an off week where 8 of their players will be
competed on the Texas Selects team in Dallas, Texas.
Their next opponent will be at University of Dallas
on November 14th and then finishes off their fall
semester with a home match versus TCU.

Texas Tech comes out strong
in Season Opener
October 24th 2009
San Angelo, Texas
It was a sunny but windy day in San Angelo and
both teams seemed eager to get the game, and the
season, started. Tech tried to take quick
advantage of an Angelo penalty on the opening
possession right in front of the goal post 22m
out but failed to convert. Most of the first
half Texas Tech kept the pressure on the Angelo
defense with many 8man picks and strings of
phase play. Tech broke through and scored 2
quick trys. One by lock Shane Pearson and
another by transfer 8man Reid Curry. Some
precision kicking by freshman flyhalf Robert
Poyser pinned Angelo State deep in their own
territory and led to another try before
halftime. Well timed tackles by freshman David Marzak
kept Angelo from finishing a few breaks. Tech
remained in control most of the match staying on
the opposition's half of the field and retaining
most of the possession. Angelo put together some
good runs towards the end of the match but just
couldn’t beat the last defender to put away a
score.
The highlight try of the game came off of a
scrum from just outside our own 22 with a few
minuets left until halftime. Flyhalf Poyser
received the scrumhalf pass and then cut back
across several Angelo defenders to rejoin his
support, after passing it off to the forwards
there was a beautiful series of quick passes and
offloads back and forth up the sideline capped
off by the blindside flanker Knowl Richardson
taking it in for a try.
Scoring for Texas Tech:
Trys:
Reid Curry-2
Shane Pearson- 2
Knowl Richardson

Robert Poyser
Manak Basra

Tech Featured in TRU Match
of the Week
Posted on 21.
Oct, 2009 By
David McPhail
The fall
season is off
and running and
two clubs that
are excited
about the new
season will be
playing this
weekend in San
Angelo, TX.
Texas Tech will
be travelling to
play Angelo
State University
on Saturday with
TRRA referee
Jacob Lenington
flying out cover
the match.
Jeff Price
with Ram Rugby
is excited to
see match day
finally arrive
after months of
sweat, blood,
and the
preparation,
that leads up to
the first week
of cup
competition.
Angelo State
Ram Rugby club
couldn’t be more
excited to kick
off the season
against Texas
Tech in a match
of the week.
Being that the
Rams are a
fairly young
squad, many of
the current
players have
never had the
opportunity to
play Tech before
and are really
keyed up for the
challenge.
Recognizing
the fact that
Texas Tech is
always a serious
contender in the
TRU, the Rams
have really
focused their
training the
past few weeks
and are prepared
to go out and
show what they
can do.
Jeff Price
noted,
“Personally, I
am glad to see
the rivalry
between Tech and
ASU, which has
been forged in
the intensity of
many past
playoff
matchups,
rekindled this
season and am
looking forward
to a clean,
hard-fought, and
entertaining
match that shows
what Texas Rugby
is made of.”
On the other
side of the
field is Texas
Tech led by
Michael Brdecka,
who has been
pushing the guys
really hard
since they
started back in
late August.
Michael adds,
“In practice we
have been trying
to create as
many in-game
situations as
possible to
improve their
rugby instincts
and knowledge.
This has led to
a couple of
great warm up
matches versus a
mixed Dallas
side and Cannon
Air Force base
from Clovis, NM.
We worked many
different
combinations of
players to see
what chemistry
works best for
us.”
Texas Tech,
like ASU Rams,
have many new
additions to
their respective
teams that have
stepped up and
earned a spot in
the starting 15.
A few of those
key additions
for Raider Rugby
is Reid Curry, a
transfer 8man
from San Diego
State, and
freshman flyhalf
Robert Poyser,
from Alliance,
have both
emerged as vocal
leaders on the
field.
The Texas
Tech guys are
ready for the
opportunity to
prove themselves
after a
disappointing
previous season
but the
enthusiasm level
is extremely
high and are
counting on the
new talent to
fill the gaps we
were missing
last year.
Michael adds,
“We are trying
to take our
season one game
at a time and
not get ahead of
ourselves but
ultimately we
want to compete
in the TRU
championship
this season. In
years past
Angelo State has
been a very
strong and
physical side
and this should
be a great match
to start off the
cup season.”
The TRU and
TRRA look
forward to a
fast paced match
that gets to
show off running
rugby with
committed and
disciplined play
from both sides.
I am sure Jake
will enjoy the
encounter!

Former Tech Rugger Past
Away One of
our Tech Rugby Alumni past away Friday July 24th
from a brain aneurism. Josh Phillips M.D played
hooker for Tech during the ’98 - ’99 seasons. He
also went on to Medical school at Texas Tech and
graduated a year or two ago with a Medical and MBA
degree. He will be truly
missed.
There is a website everyone can go to for his

Big XII Tournament
November 14th, 2008
Norman, Ok.
Tech wrapped up its fall semester with the Big
XII tournament this past weekend in Norman Oklahoma.
Tech finished 0-3 on the weekend picking up 8th
place in the tournament. Their record this
weekend did not show the effort put forth. Every
minuet was hard fought and Texas Tech came up on the
short end of many situations. Many young players
received playing time to help develop the player
more. Tech will now put in some offseason work and
get ready for the up coming Cup Season starting
January 24th.Texas Tech travels down to Huntsville
to open the season against Sam Houston State.

Tech Places 3rd in
second annual Border Wars Tournament
October 25th, 2008
Glenco Park
Dallas, Tx
The Border Wars Tournament is a chance for 2
states to play each other for state pride. Texas was
represented by Texas Tech and Texas A&M and Oklahoma
by OU and Oklahoma State.
Saturday
Tech vs. OSU
A&M vs. OU
Sunday
A&M vs. OSU
Tech vs. OU
Tech played Oklahoma State the first day of the
tournament. It was a hard fought game.Tech played
aggressive and kept the pressure on Ok State all
day. Tech scored off of the mistakes forced by the
constant pressure. 20-15 final score.
The second day had Texas Tech up against a strong
OU team who had a battle with Texas A&M the day
before. Tech had played them earlier in the year in
Lubbock falling short 26-15. The loose play of OU
continually caused problems for Tech. Ou dominated
the first half going up by a few try's. Tech fought
back at the end putting up a few trys of their own
but it was too little too late. The Raiders came up
short 62-18.
Texas A&M ended up undefeated and winning the
Tournament for Texas.
1st place - Texas A&M
2nd place - Oklahoma
3rd place - Texas Tech
4th Place- Ok State |

Two Tech Ruggers Make
Texas Collegiate Selects Squad, another as an
alternate
October 5th, 2008
After a chaotic tryout system due to hurricane
Ike, two men from Texas Tech were chosen to
represent Texas on the
Collegiate
Select Side. Jess Rosen was chosen
after proving himself in the Cowtown Tournament
this past weekend. Taylor Burkhalter was a part
of the team last year and got asked back again this
year despite a hamstring injury. Manak Basra made
the team as an alternate after not even playing the
sport a year yet. The pair will play with
selects in the upcoming
West Collegiate All
Star Championship in Dallas Texas on Nov. 1 and 2.

Burkhalter

Basra
Good luck and way to represent our
team at the next level.

Cowtown Tournament
provides plenty of experience for young Tech Ruggers
October 4th, 2008
Gateway Park
Ft Worth, Texas

Texas Tech rugby played
very well this past weekend in the Cowtown
Tournament in Ft Worth. Tech was playing with
limited numbers due to 8 players trying out for the
Texas Collegiate Select Side and many players out
with injuries. Many development side players stepped
up and played very well. Tech tied Rice and Baylor
and lost to strong Division I A&M squad. The teams
determination could not be questioned. Though
inexperienced the players played with intensity and
fought hard all tournament long. Well played gents.

Ruggers Help out at Local Boys & Girls Optimist Club
July 10th, 2008
Lubbock, Texas
The volunteers helped run games outside and gave
out prizes to participants for achievements and
behavior. They also learned a little rugby from a
kicking challenge ran by our very own James Sandy.
Jess Rosen also was an outstanding volunteer helping
to make the event a success. The children were able
to learn a little about health and wellness while
being able to have some fun outside with some
different activities they wouldn't have normally
been able to do. The team was able to provide these
kids with some much needed attention and role
models. Everyone had a great time, and the teammates
who volunteered definitely came away with an
experience!

Stays Atop TOLA Summer 7's Series With Good Showing
in the Lone Star Classic
Tourny
June 7th, 2008
Dallas, Texas

The team started the tournament off with two
solid wins, and some players they would eventually
lose to attend an alumni’s wedding. Then they played
an opponent they had beaten in the previous Midland
tournament, the Dallas Reds. A questionable call
awarded the Dallas Reds a free try which proved to
be the difference in the match. Tech wouldn’t lose
again. After playing the Tech Alumni team who had
picked up some younger players and whose alias was
SMU tennis, they finished pool play at 3-1. Five
teams had gone undefeated, but Tech was the highest
ranked team who went 3-1 and was put into the second
highest bracket, the bowl. As the second seed, Tech
faced el Azul in the semi-finals and went on to win
comfortably. Then after a long day they were set to
face Shreveport for the championship. An inspired
Tech team came out and really earned their final win
to secure the Bowl Championship. During the match
Tech saw the only scrum who matched them in height.
Manak continued his dominate play by round house
kicking a player to save a try and eventually turned
into a game securing try for Tech.

Trevor Cobb. Thanks Trevor. |

Tech
Earns 1st Place at Los Perros De Mayo Tournament
in Midland
May 31st, 2008
Midland, Texas

A very good turnout for us Saturday morning,
as we saw many
faces for the
first time this
summer. The
strong numbers
proved to be
helpful though,
as the
tournament, well
most of it,
allowed
unlimited subs.
I was very
pleased with the
numbers we
traveled with,
along with the
play from
everyone this
weekend. The
offloads in the
tackles and the
defensive
tackling were
quite
surprising,
considering the
limited practice
in each. A very
warm West Texas
day found the
team with the
most players
(us) getting the
#1 seed in the
tournament. This
was thanks
largely to the
masterful
selecting
process of the
great Coach /
Captain /
eventual MVP of
the Tech team
DUSTIN ROTAN.
The seeding set
up Texas Tech
vs. the Dallas
Reds for the
first game of
the tournament.
Our
communication
needed picking
up after a 12-10
victory over the
Reds, who proved
to be a solid
side by the end
of the
tournament. With
the emphasis on
communication in
general, and the
ideas of spacing
out and moving
the ball, we
were ready to
take on
Midland’s A
side. Although
very hard
fought, and
thanks in large
to a 60 meter
rumble by
Goliath, we fell
short by three
points despite a
last minute try
and conversion.
We faced
Midland’s B side
in the third
match and took
care of business
with a 35-7
victory
emphasizing a
“touch”
mentality. A 2-1
pool play record
set us up to
play Midland A
in the finals,
where our
numbers and ball
movement helped
us prevail with
first place in
the end. Overall
a very well
played
tournament,
especially to
the 7’s rookies
that made up
about 85% of our
team. There are
many things to
build on and
many things to
work on, but
overall an
impressive and
encouraging
outing to see. A
special thank
you to Kyle for
getting T.J.
kicked out of
the tournament
by being a great
wrestling dummy.
Written by 7's coach Dustin
Rotan. Thank you Dustin. |
