In the early 1970s, Tri Deltas
expressed a wish to have a Fraternity philanthropy to which both funds and
voluntary service could be contributed. A national survey established that Tri
Delta chapters were interested in children, hospitals and cancer. At the 1974
Convention, it was decided to combine the three. As a result, Tri Deltas
throughout the nation have concentrated their philanthropic support toward local
research and treatment facilities, camps and scholarships for children with
cancer. The hands-on work and contributions are made at the local level, while
the Tri Delta Foundation's Children's Cancer Charities chairman serves as a
coordinator and resource for CCC projects.
The mission of these charities is to
help alleviate the suffering of children with cancer. At local, national and
international levels, Tri Deltas offer financial and volunteer contributions to
the research and treatment of children with cancer.
The wonderful aspect of children's cancer charities is that it permits large and
small chapters or even a single individual to participate in the Fraternity's
philanthropy. Some alumnae chapters raise enough funds to make significant gifts
to establish wings of hospitals or rooms in children's wards. Others have
provided funds for equipment, research and cancer camp scholarships. Since 1974,
Tri Deltas have raised more than $10 million in support of children's cancer
hospitals, research facilities and cancer camps. It is likely that the actual
amount is much higher. Others contribute substantially with volunteer service,
helping to brighten the lives of children with cancer.
