Academic Honesty
In fall 2007, the chapter discussed at length the procedures of the University in regard to academic honesty as embodied in University OP 74.08 ("Allegations of Misconduct in Research or Scholarly Activity"). The issue had been raised by a concerned faculty member alarmed by wording which specifies that that "All members of the university community are responsible for reporting instances of misconduct in research or scholarly activity." Ultimately the chapter did not challenge this specific wording--the degree of obligation entailed does not exceed that normally required of members of a community when gross malfeasance becomes obvious--the wording is in fact less onerous than formulations such "are required to" or formulations that include specific penalties for non-compliance. The chapter could not find a better way to formulate the obligation.
However, OP 74.08, upon examination, appeared to be badly drawn up. The chapter produced a marked copy, suggesting possible revisions, and forwarded it to the Faculty Senate.
