Lady Raiders Win ENMU Rodeo

By Sean Cleveland (9.23.09)

The Texas Tech University Rodeo Team kicked off the 2009-2010 season with an impressive women’s team victory at the Eastern New Mexico University rodeo in Portales, New Mexico, September 17-19, 2009.

The women defeated seven other teams from the Southwest Region of the National Collegiate Rodeo Association, with Tarleton State University, Howard College, Western Texas College, and South Plains College rounding out the top five.

The men placed fifth out of ten teams behind Western Texas College, Eastern New Mexico University, Tarleton State University, and Weatherford College, respectively.

I’m really pleased with how well we performed in Portales,” Coach Chris Guay noted.
We know we’re going to improve as the fall and spring schedule unfolds and it’s important that we know where we stand.

Creswell Dominates

Erica Creswell, a senior Psychology major from Weatherford, Oklahoma, started where she left off last season by dominating the goat tying competition, placing first in each round of the event.

Other prominent performances include:

  • Dani McGuire, a junior Agricultural and Applied Economics major from Gardendale, who began her 2009 campaign by finishing third in the women’s all-around standings on the strength of her fourth place showing in goat tying and a strong first go round in breakaway calf roping.
  • Ashley Davis, a senior Animal and Food Sciences major from Reform, Alabama, also scored points for the Lady Raiders by turning in a strong first go round in goat tying and placing ninth overall in the event.

Solid Performance

The Tech men’s team turned in a solid outing as well with a number of Red Raiders turning in impressive early-season performances. Most notably:

  • Luke Creasy, a junior English major from Alberta, Canada, finished first in the finals and third in the aggregate in bareback riding.
  • C.J. Kerr, a freshman Animal and Food Sciences major from Paradise, placed first in the first go round and tied for fifth in the aggregate in steer wrestling.
  • Logan Allen, a senior Agricultural Leadership major from Crescent, Iowa, finished a strong and consistent fourth in saddle bronc riding.
  • Stetson Rasberry, a senior Business major from Roby, finished fourth in both the first go round and overall in bull riding. Rasberry was joined by Bonnor Bolton, a recent transfer from Odessa College, who also qualified for the top ten in the event.
