Texas Tech Womens Team Increases Lead

Haley Nelson Senior English major leads all barrel racers in the Southwest Region after three of ten National Intercollegiate regular season rodeos. Nelson won the barrel racing championship at this week's rodeo hosted by Vernon College. The Channing, Texas native posted the fastest time of the week, 16.92 seconds, in go round one to best the rest of 133 barrel racers.
Nelson then placed second in the top ten finals (short go round) to win the overall championship.
Bailey Guthrie, a Senior Exercise and Sports Sciences major, is in the lead in the Southwest regional goat tying standings after three rodeos. The Rigby, Idaho cowgirl placed 5th in go round one, placed second in the finals, to finish in a tie for second place at Vernon in the goat tying.
Tech's Womens Rodeo Team leads the 15 colleges and universities that make up the Southwest Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
Texas Tech's Men Team was lead by Josh Carden from Elberta, Alabama. Carden came in to the finals placing 5th in the bull riding and 7th in the Steer Wrestling. The Junior Agricultural and Applied Economics major won first in the steer wrestling finals with a blistering 3.7 second run to come back and finish second in the average (overall).
Tech's mens and womens teams travel to Perryton next week for the Frank Phillips College/West Texas A&M Hosted rodeo. October 20-22 Texas Tech will host the region at the 62nd annual Texas Tech NIRA rodeo. All proceeds from the event with be used for general support of the rodeo program.
