Since arriving at Texas Tech in 1997, Chris Guay had led the Texas Tech Rodeo Team to the best of times. As the school's first ever rodeo coach, Guay has been able to improve Texas Tech's efforts in the areas of recruitment, fundraising, and of course, performance. Guay is now attracting some of the region's top performers each year to become Red Raiders. This improved recruiting is a by-product of his efforts in securing funding for scholarships and endowments. In the past few years, Guay's work has created more than $500,000 in rodeo scholarship endowments for members of the Texas Tech Rodeo Team. The annual Texas Tech Intercollegiate Rodeo also has grown under Guay's leadership. A large part of Guay's success at Texas Tech comes from his own accomplishments as a rodeo cowboy. In 1991, he was the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Bareback Bronc Texas Circuit Champion, Wrangler Circuit Series Champion, and Mesquite Rodeo Season Champion. He also was the 1986 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Bareback Bronc Reserve National Champion and the NIRA Southwest Region Bareback Bronc Champion in 1985 and 1986. Prior to coming to Texas Tech, Guay was the rodeo coach and an agricultural instructor at Wharton County Junior College. He led WCJC to regional championships in both men's and women's competition in both men's and women's competition from 1994-1997. In 1995, he was instrumental in the design and construction of a rodeo and equestrian center that was built on the WCJC campus. In 1985, Guay graduated from Tarleton State University with a bachelor's degree in agricultural education. He followed that in 1989 by graduating with a master's degree in agricultural education from Tarleton State. He and his wife Kim have two daughters, Maci and Maya.
