Texas Tech Water Initiative
Welcome to the Texas Tech Water Initiative Website. The Water Initiative serves to raise the visibility of past and current water-related research at Texas Tech University.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the years 2005 to 2015 as
the
"Water for Life" decade. Among the themes that are
central
to
the "Water for Life" decade are water scarcity, water resources management, transboundary water issues, environment and biodiversity, food and agriculture, and
water pollution.
For the past forty years, Texas Tech researchers have been working to address these
same water challenges.
When Jon Whitmore became the 14th President of Texas Tech University, he asked the faculty to select a few research areas where Tech could focus its efforts; the first topic nominated was water. "Water issues," Whitmore said, "are a great example of an area where Texas Tech's expertise will have a profound effect not only on Lubbock and Texas, but also on the nation and the world."
Over one hundred faculty members from seven colleges and the School of Law contribute to water research and education. Investigative inquiries include examining regional groundwater depletion, studying agricultural sustainability through irrigation technology, mapping well permits with customized computer databases, understanding wetland ecology, assessing the human consequences of water toxicity, and much more.
