Education
As a member of the Graduate Faculty in the Department of Natural Resources Management, Dr. David Haukos supports graduate students, serve on graduate dissertation and thesis committees, and participate in University activities. He has cooperated with Dr. Loren Smith in the development and publishing of “Common Flora of Playa Lakes,” coordinated development and serve as Education and Interpretive Coordinator for the Native Rangeland Research and Education Area on the university campus (Prairie and Playa Nature Area), and served as the campus faculty advisor for the Texas Tech University Student Chapter of Duck Unlimited. As Education and Interpretive Coordinator, Dr. Haukos is responsible for the development and implementation of environmental education activities for the Native Rangeland Research and Education Area on the campus of Texas Tech University. The 160-acre area is a relic short-grass prairie and contains an 18-acre playa wetland. Dr. Haukos' current funded research includes assessing the current status and function of playa wetlands, investigating the influence of USDA conservation programs on ecological services provided by playa wetlands in the High Plains, and banding mottled and whistling ducks. He is a member of The Wildlife Society, the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society, the American Ornithologists Union, the Cooper Ornithologist Society, the Society of Wetland Scientists, Sigma XI, and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. Dr. Haukos has been recognized with the USFWS Star Award for work associated with the development of a Playa Wetland Management District, the Thinking Outside the Book award, and as the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University.
