Much of Dr. Andrew Jackson's current research focuses on the effects and sources of perchlorate exposure. In addition to identifying and characterizing natural sources of perchlorate, Dr. Jackson has published on the widespread occurrence of naturally occurring perchlorate in the high plains of Texas and New Mexico, the effects of perchlorate on earthworm survival and reproductive success, perchlorate isotope forensics, the uptake and exudation behavior of perchlorate in smartweed, and the thyroid function and reproductive success in rodents exposed to perchlorate via food and water. Other ongoing research projects, which are non-perchlorate-focused, include an evaluation of NASA's advanced life support integrated water recovery system for non-optimal conditions and terrestrial applications and examining efficient and cost effective combination of wind power and desalination technology.
Dr. Jackson is the Associate Editor of Air, Water and Soil Pollution, editorial board member of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and executive board member for the Water Environment Association of Texas. He also serves on committees for the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and The Texas Department of Transportation. He has twice received the Civil Engineering Research of the Year Award (2002, 2004, 2006).
