The thrust of Dr. Phil Johnson's research efforts has been focused on applied research that has application at the farm, regional, and state levels. He has developed a diversified research program that reflects my interest and knowledge in finance and banking, production agriculture, and conservation and resource management. Current and past research projects include participating in the Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) for Crops, understanding the economics of juniper control on rangelands with objectives to determine the economic feasibility of various control methods for juniper infestations, and evaluating brush control with a primary objective of enhancing water yields from range lands blends together range economics and water resource economics. Other projects include an economic analysis of the impacts of a declining Ogallala Aquifer, evaluating an alternative water conservation policies that restrict pumpage from the aquifer on farm and regional economic, and estimating the potential impacts of biotechnological advances on farm profitability and viability in the Texas High Plains Region.

The courses Dr. Johnson teaches are primarily applied in nature - agricultural finance, agricultural financial analysis, and rural property appraisal; therefore, he aims to tie together the material from the theoretical basis to the practical application using examples that are relevant to the material and represent situations the students may face in the future. Dr. Johnson is affiliated with the American Agricultural Economics Association, the Western Agricultural Economics Association, the Southern Agricultural Economics Association, the Texas Section of the Society for Range Management, and Gamma Sigma Delta. In 2002, he was inducted into the Texas Tech University Teaching Academy. He has received other honors, including Outstanding Faculty Member of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (2000, 1998-1999), recipient of the Texas Academy of Honor in Agricultural Credit Scholarship (1992), and Outstanding Conservation Farmer (1983).
